Comedy queen Rita is dead
By MICK SEAMARK
COCKNEY comedienne Rita Webb, Britain's best-known "ugly" actress
died in hospital yesterday at the age of 77.
The 15st, 4ft, 10in, Tv star was admitted for tests three weeks ago and died
with her husband Jeffery at her bedside.
At their London home yesterday he said: "Doctors discovered she had cancer
and I'm afraid there was nothing they could do."
Rita was one of Tv's busiest character actresses and claimed her ugly looks
and fat figure were her fortune.
Regularly
"If they want an old hag they send for me" she once said.
The red haired Londoner never had an acting lesson in her life but after walking
into television after the war she was seldom off screen.
She appeared regularly with Benny Hill, Spike Milligan and most other top
comedians and starred in countless comedy film roles.
And Rita could laught at herself. She thought it was very amusing when someone
wrote on the cover of a TV script: "incredible hag wanted
try Rita
Webb."
